Question : Help to stop food addiction and compulsive eating?
Hi everyone,

I am not overweight and actually do know a lot about nutrition. I also love working out and do a variety of activities. So, I have no problems there. My problem seems mostly psychological. I binge multiple times per day, even on healthy foods. I will overeat ANYTHING, not just junkfood. I tried getting rid of most of the food in my house, but I will still find something to overeat. I also seem to have a strange compulsion to finish whole containers of foods in one sitting.

I have tried so many things, such as making specific “plans” for myself, trying to not eat standing up, rewarding myself for good behavior, etc. I can stick with a plan (like eating portioned meals) for only a few days before I start getting out of control again. I feel like I am abusing food like a drug, because it makes me sick but I can’t stop.

I was wondering if anyone has had success in overcoming something like this? Specifics would help. Thank you!
Thank you everyone for your help! I know that I must deal with my emotional eating. The website about emotions that Joy gave is awesome. I am starting a little self-therapy by writing my “life story” of why I can’t deal with emotions. I am still afraid of going to therapy, but at least this is helping me put my thoughts in order so when/if I do go, I will know what to discuss. I am feeling a lot better already. THANK YOU!!!

I think it’s really mature of you to recognize a potential problem in your life and really want to change. The thing about addictions is that you usually can’t “fix” them on your own. The actions – whether they revolve around food, drugs, alcohol, etc, are usually symptoms of a larger problem. Just fixing the food portion of the problem probably won’t help long-term – which is why you haven’t had success with plans and goals on your own.

I would suggest that you find a qualified counselor in your area to help you figure out what’s going on beneath the food addiction. It can be really helpful, and your chances of long-term success is much, much higher. I wish you the best!
