My grandchild (17) was put on 50mg of seroquel after being tenetively diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She also has been diagnosed with post tramatic stress syndrone and OCD.

The cause and risk factors of bipolar disorder are not completely understood. However, the condition appears to be strongly associated with genes since it can run in families. Individuals who have relatives with a history of a mood disorder have a greater risk of developing bipolar disorder. Imbalance in the brain biochemicals called neurotransmitters, which convey messages between the nerves, also appears to play a major role. Too many or too few neurotransmitters are believed to cause alterations in mood.

I have a son-in-law who is bi-polar. His mother is also. She is finally on meds. She is doing awesome. My son-in-law has been in jail 4 times in 6 years. He has never had a job more than a few weeks, can’t deal with the real world in any way. Is a drug addict who refuses to take meds for his manic behaviors, which also include rages, once of which he stabbed a guy in the neck and has absolutely no control over his behaviors. Be grateful they have such wonderful help available now. There may be natural treatments which will aid somewhat, but nothing I know of is an actual proven therapy that could possible replace the meds. With science and time that could rapidly change, but encourage her daily. Her self esteem is probably very low. Not to give her excuses, but to help her see things can be better for her. I am not sure how seroquel helps OCD. My mentally handicapped daughter is on meds for OCD and, of course, only your doctor can tell you for sure, but seroquel is not what she is on for that. Good luck and never quit looking for answers to help your grandchild know she can live a normal life like every one else!! You can be a solid rock for her if you are steady and sure. She’s going to need that.

No there are not.
A someone who actually has bipolar I wouldn’t recommend stopping any medication unless under doctor supervision.
It does take a long time to get the illness under control but please persevere.
Regular bedtimes and the less stress the better is wonderful. I find that if I start going up or down then laying down for a sleep usually gets me back on track.
It’s also imperative that your grandchild doesn’t feel alone. Lots of famous people have bipolar and have achieved great things.

I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve managed their bipolar disorder with a healthy lifestyle, including diet. They say Omega 3′s are particularly important, as well as avoiding any triggering stressors in their lives. That’s easier said than done of course.
